“Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the GAIN SAYINGS OF KORAH.”
Jude 1:11
The Gain sayings of Korah
Numbers 16:3
They [led by Korah] came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”
After learning the first two traits of Spots in the church, I conclude this series with the third types of spot – gain sayings of Korah. Korah was a Levite who served in the house of God during the exodus of Israel. His duties as a Levite meant that he played vital roles in the Tabernacle and in the lives of his people. However, that did not deter him from carrying out a rebellion against Moses and his brother, Aaron. He claimed the brothers imposed their authority over the Israelites and that he is also a Levite who is capable of leading the Israelites too. His grave mistake was that he challenged a God-chosen leadership. He claimed he was also a priest who could play Aaron’s role so he demanded equal powers. It’s true, he was in Levy (a priestly clan tribe). What perhaps never crossed his mind was that Aaron had a special appointment – as High Priest. God proved his power and confirmed the authority of Moses and Aaron to the Israelites. Korah ended up dying together with his family and 250 others. The ground literally opened to bury them alive together with all their properties. That is what I call the ‘grave effects of rebellion’.
The ‘Korah Spots’
People who exhibit the traits of Korah are Spots who tarnish the image of the church. What they do is;
· They first of all become disconnected with their roles/position in the church and begin to think they could function better than other leaders who hold responsibilities they envy
· They then begin to speak against such leaders with their egos and malice in their quest to try and seek or prove equality with such leaders, whom they are obviously not equal with.
· They use the Word of God to support their rebellious claims against their leaders. They say things like, “we are all children of God”, “we are all a chosen generation”. However, there is stratification in the church based on what responsibility God has given us.
· They try to wield more power or responsibilities they have not been assigned to. They do that to feel the power they don’t have.
If you do or know anyone who exhibits these traits or attributes, he or she is a spot. The solution to these ‘Korah Spots’ is to have a leader like Moses, who can insist on his or her authority over such people and put them in their rightful places. Thus, they need to be discipline to remain in order or stay loyal.
Concluding Thoughts
All the truths I have shared from these series right from part 1 to part 4 seeks to draw your attention to the self-sabotaging behaviors Christians exhibit that destroys the image and beauty of the church. This makes the church unattractive to unbelievers, resulting to challenges in winning the lost for Christ. I am sad to say that if these negative behaviors I set out to mend/address in my blog do not stop, the church won’t be relevant to the world sometime to come. If we are willing and obedient, we shall eat the fruit of the land. Get rid of traits of spots so that you won’t be gotten rid of. I hope you got some nets mended.
